Linton S-M’s latest opus, Where Are We Going? was published this weekRenamed as Where Are We Going? @linton_mcbraida ‘s brilliant photo-poetry outsider art mixes city, people, memory, anti-racist protest, glitchy cut-ups re-imagined through the experimental lens of #borismikhailov
“These photos were acquired between 2019-2026, taken mostly in Bristol, Manchester and surrounding areas. During the making of this book, I decided to push away from Photoshop and technology, although it was used at points, most of the manipulation was done manually on A6 slips of paper, old acetate, running images through printers which shouldn’t be put in there & various other methods. I wanted to manipulate items in the physical realm. I find that when I look at stuff on the screen it doesn’t really exist in my mind. I don’t like this, so I wanted to bring it back to life and I feel like doing this led to more interesting outcomes. Most of this book is just my experiences. I never set out to take photos of anything, I wouldn’t have gone in this direction naturally; they are just visual representations. A lot of my favourite bits of work in this are just the photos where not much is happening and people are chilling out.
I sometimes feel like work needs to be intense and have a heavy subject matter, but I feel like that’s not a very accurate depiction of any situation. Even in the most desperate, chaotic times, you will still see an old man drinking in the pub, looking casual. I wanted to show a bit of everything. I never would have called myself creative. A few years ago, when I used to work in kitchens, I don’t remember thinking about it; being creative wasn’t really a part of my life. Some of these photos are from this time, although back then I would never have called it photography, I just took photos of people. I lost most of the photos from this period, but what I do have left I find interesting. A lot of these photos aren’t even that compositionally good, the quality is just okay, in the best of times. I just like the stories they tell.”
